What are the Opportunity Programs?
The Opportunity Programs are comprised of the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education and Opportunity Program (HEOP) and the Collegiate Science Technology Entry Program (CSTEP). These are designed to support you as an undergraduate student at NYU so you can succeed academically and cultivate personal and professional growth.
What is the difference between Arthur O. Eve HEOP and CSTEP?
Arthur O. Eve HEOP students may pursue a variety of majors. Arthur O. Eve HEOP students must fall within specific income guidelines, as determined by the State of New York.
CSTEP students must have a strong interest in the licensed professions such as Engineering, Medicine, Architecture, Psychology, and others. CSTEP students must either be from specific populations or meet the same income criteria as Arthur O. Eve HEOP students.
For both programs, you must also be a resident of New York State. As a student of either program, you benefit from the same academic support and services.
Who is a typical Arthur O. Eve HEOP or CSTEP student?
You demonstrate the academic ability and determination to benefit from the services provided by the Opportunity Programs. You may be from a low income household and perhaps the first in your family to attend college, or you may be from a population that is deemed by the New York State Education Department to be underrepresented in certain professions. For instance, there are very few Spanish-speaking occupational therapists.
If admitted to NYU through the Opportunity Programs, will I be a regular NYU student?
Absolutely! If you enter the university through Arthur O. Eve HEOP or CSTEP you will be a regular NYU student, enrolled in one of our undergraduate schools or colleges. However, you are required to attend a six-week pre-freshmen summer program designed to prepare you for your first semester at NYU.
You can participate in general NYU activities and join student clubs. The NYU Office of Student Activities (OSA) has nearly 453 all-University student clubs open to all NYU undergraduates. OSA and other student resources are located in a University-wide student center (the Kimmel Center for University Life). Additionally, you will participate in the same academic courses, where you adhere to the same academic standards. During your freshmen year, you will participate in academic workshops designed to support your credit-bearing classes.
Can I apply for housing?
Yes, you can apply. However, to be eligible, Arthur O. Eve HEOP students must live outside the five boroughs or special circumstances (i.e. be a ward of the court or in foster care). There are no restrictions on CSTEP students applying for housing. CSTEP students are responsible for the cost of the dorm.
Will I receive credit for Advanced Placement classes and college courses?
NYU accepts AP credit if you receive a 4 or 5 on most AP examinations, and grants credit for most college courses taken in high school if you receive a B or better. Although advanced standing credits may be useful toward the overall 128 credits needed for the NYU degree, they generally are awarded as elective credit and do not satisfy specific NYU requirements.
